It's not about how much you sleep, but how WELL you sleep.

Sleeping well is not always easy. There are so many factors that can interfere with it, such as stress from work, family responsibilities, etc. Lack of sleep could influence your mood and make your day difficult.

Here are a few tips to help you get better quality sleep.

1. Stick to a regular bedtime.

Going to sleep and getting up at the same time every day helps your body by having a sleeping cycle. Choose a time when you feel tired to help you go to sleep faster and try to stick to this schedule on weekends as well. If you can not fall asleep within 15 minutes, get up and do something relaxing. Staying in bed and trying to force yourself to fall asleep will make it even harder.

If you are well rested you should wake up by yourself without an alarm. If you do need one then you might need to consider setting an earlier bedtime. If you need to rest, it is a good idea to take an nap in the early afternoon, but try to limit it to 30 minutes as it may interfere with you sleep otherwise.

2. Be in a bright environment during the day.

Letting the most light in your house or office will have a positive influence on you and will make you more awake. Try to take your sunglasses off and spend the most time outside as possible. Staying in dark environment will make you sleepy.

At night try to do the opposite and avoid reading from back-lit devices such as tablets and smart phones. Reading a book or listening to music will help you relax before going to bed. If you need to get up during the night try to use a flash light if safely possible to minimize the light.

3. Eat right and exercise

Try to not eat too much before going to bed. It is best to have a light meal and a snack before going to bed like a banana or a small bowl of cereal. Try to limit how much you drink at night as to avoid getting up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom.

Even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy, it will disrupt it later. Nicotine and caffeine both are stimulant and will take hours to wear off so try to not consume either at night.

Exercising regularly will also help you get a deeper sleep. As little as 30 minutes of activity per day can have a positive influence on the way you sleep.  You could go for walks, ride a bike, even household work and gardening could work.

4. Find the right mattress and pillow

Find the mattress and pillow that are the most comfortable for you. Ideally, a mattress that reduces the pressure points on your body should give you a better night of sleep.
